The product
Will callers know they're talking to an AI?
Yes. Every call opens with a disclosure that the caller is speaking with the firm's AI intake assistant, plus a recording notice and how to reach a person. We think honesty is better for your firm and for callers, and a growing number of states require it.
What if a caller just wants a human?
They say "person" (or anything like it) and they're transferred. No menus, no loops. Our agent sees the AI's summary so the caller doesn't repeat themselves.
Who are the human agents?
US-based intake agents trained on business law intake, ethics guardrails, and each firm's rules. They take warm transfers during your coverage window, handle escalations, and return callbacks. They don't give legal advice.
Does the AI give legal advice?
No. It never gives legal advice, evaluates whether a caller has a case, or predicts outcomes. When a caller asks, it explains that an attorney can cover that in a consultation, and it can transfer them if your rules say so.
How does the conflict check work?
Before any facts, the AI collects the names of everyone involved: the caller's company and DBAs, owners, officers, parent and affiliates, opposing parties, counterparties, and their counsel. That list goes to your firm to run through your conflict system. If there's a possible conflict, we take no further details and hold the matter for attorney review.
Do you support Spanish?
Yes. The AI handles intake in Spanish from day one. Spanish-speaking human agents are on our roadmap.
Can it handle existing clients?
Yes. It identifies existing clients, routes them to the right attorney or staff member, or takes a detailed message. That's included in every plan.
Setup and integrations
How long does setup take?
Our target is about two weeks from kickoff to go-live: script and escalation rules, calendar and Clio connection, test calls with your team, then launch. Many firms start with after-hours and overflow before moving all intake calls to Retainr.
Do I need to change my phone number?
No. You forward your existing number (all calls, after-hours, or unanswered calls) to the line we set up for your firm.
Which practice management systems do you support?
Clio first. If you use something else, you'll get a structured email summary after every intake. Lawmatics, MyCase, and Smokeball are on our roadmap.
Can I customize the script?
Yes. Your firm approves the greeting, voice, intake fields, qualification criteria, and escalation rules, and can change them anytime.
Pricing and ethics
Why don't you charge per lead or per signed client?
Rule 5.4 bars lawyers from sharing legal fees with non-lawyers, and pricing tied to signed clients or matter value can create that problem. Our pricing is a flat monthly subscription that doesn't depend on whether a caller hires you.
What counts as a call?
Any inbound phone call or text conversation we handle for your firm, including existing-client routing. Spam, robocalls, and hang-ups under 15 seconds don't count.
Is there a contract?
Month-to-month after the initial setup, with a master services agreement and a data protection agreement. Final terms are being reviewed by ethics counsel before our first paid engagement.
How is caller data protected?
Encryption in transit and at rest through our providers, role-based access with multi-factor authentication, 90-day default retention, and no use of client data to train AI models. See Security & compliance for what's in place and what's on our roadmap.
Hear it for yourself.
Call the demo line and try to stump it: ask for a person, mention a deadline, name five parties to a deal. Or book a 20-minute walkthrough.
